21+ Science of Alcohol event (paired with our Mind Matters traveling exhibit)
Shake, stir, and mix your way through an unforgettable evening at the Science Center of Iowa’s 21+ Mixology night! Join us for a night that explores the science of fermentation, chemistry, and the art of crafting the perfect cocktail (or mocktail).
Step into interactive presentation where you’ll explore how ingredients interact, why flavors change with context, and how the brain interprets taste, aroma, and sensation. Guided mixology demos with head bartender/mixologist, Rex Schulze from Splash in Downtown Des Moines, will walk you through how nature creates alcohol through the marvel of fermentation. Learn how beer and hard cider can become whiskey and brandy through the process of distillation as well as other interesting facts as we explore Science on the Rocks. Whether you're a cocktail enthusiast or just curious about the science behind the bar, this night promises a spirited blend of education and entertainment.
